Four year old Brutus was dropped off at the local shelter when his family moved and didn't want to pack up the dog and take him with them.     Meet Bailey. This 2 year old shepherd mix somehow ended up at the local shelter. Why her family didn't come to get her is a mystery. Her loving personality and gentle manners indicate to us that she was once a loved family member. She is a sweet girl who is friendly with everyone and everything she meets. She was a big hit at a recent adoption event, charming everybody with her infectious happiness and friendly nature. Animal ID: 14NV1730308Slash (male)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Four year old Slash's previous owners were given two choices when Animal Control came to visit: Get him to the vet or surrender him to them. They chose the latter. An open, untreated puncture wound was infected on one of his front legs. He was severely emaciated, malnourished, and the condition of his skin and coat screamed neglect to the point of labeling it abuse. But does this long, tall wolfhound, malinois, shepherd (?) mix hold any grudges against humans? Considering he would rather snuggle up in your lap than go for a walk in the park, we would have to say no. Slash is somewhat aloof and reserved with strangers but with a little ... (Read More)time and a few treats, you will be the recipient of all the love and affection this 75 lb. lap dog has to give. The only other thing (besides a few good meals to get him to a healthy weight) Slash requires of his next family (the one he will have forever) is that there is at least one lap that he can call his own. For an adoption donation of only $325 you can be the lucky family who Slash will be eternally grateful to for truly saving his life and rocking his world. With a dog like Slash, smarter than he probably should be, you could teach him to be the lead guitarist in your jammin' air band. Changing the world for Slash will be more fun than 'Rockin' into the Night.' (Less)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Miss Lacey Jay. Lacey has seen a few sunsets in her day and has been around the block a few times. But she has the sweetness and innocence of a newborn. Lacey just wants to be loved. She just wants a family that she can love for the rest of her days. Lacey was dropped off at the shelter by people who said they found her wandering stray in their neighborhood. This gentle girl exhibited many of the behaviors that dogs who have been surrendered by their families would. When volunteers would take her out for walks, she would get anxious and search every face she saw, looking for the familiar faces of the family that isn't coming back ... (Read More)for her. If you can give Lacey the stability and security of a loving forever home, just fill out our online adoption application. It only requires an adoption donation of $325 to bring home this adoring girl who will gently paw at you for more petting and love when she feels you haven't given her her daily quota of affection. Lacey may be beginning her golden years, but she has lots of life left to live. Can you give her a chance to live it? Animal ID: 14NV1730212Star (female)

German Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

You have to wonder what has happened to beautiful, young Star in her life to make her so afraid. Although being rounded up by Animal Control, put in a dark box that moved and probably bounced her around, and then ending up at the local kill shelter was probably enough to compound any fears she may have already had. When she was sentenced to death for those fears, VSR felt we had to do something to help this petite thing. We got her into boarding, and luckily one of the staff members noticed that Star wasn't eating well and her urine was dark and thick. A quick trip to the vet revealed a stick wedged on the roof of her mouth. Surgery was ... (Read More)required to remove it, along with 4 of her teeth. Judging from the amount of damage, the stick had probably been there for months. Now on the road to recovery, Star seeks comfort in the lap or between the legs of a familiar person. She is non-reactive to both large and small dogs. She just wants to feel safe. So if you have a calm, patient, and understanding home to offer Star (and if you have a nice, balanced dog, that might be even better for Star) please fill out our online adoption application and set aside $325 for her adoption donation. Because changing the world for this Star will make you feel over the moon. And doesn't she deserve a chance to shine? (Less)

German Shepherd    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Mr. Mako has come such a long way since he was surrendered to VSR!! He came to us unsocialized with poor impulse control, fearful of strangers, and kennel aggressive. We have been working with him continuously since then and we are happy to announce that Mako recently attended his first adoption event. Even those of us who have worked with him were impressed with how well he did! He was calm, friendly, allowed strangers to meet and pet him, met a couple of other large dogs politely, gave a few kisses, and was able to walk through the store taking in the new sights and sounds with curiosity and without fear. He is an incredibly smart boy ... (Read More)who is becoming more affectionate, patient and eager to please. In a situation where he is unsure, he has learned to look to his handler for direction. He's very athletic and loves outings to the park where he can explore, stretch his legs and show off his beautiful gait! Again, Mako would do best in a home with kind, patient adults with German Shepherd experience, who are active and able to give him the exercise he needs and loves, and committed to continued training to improve his confidence and socialization skills. We believe his adopters will be rewarded a gorgeous, well-mannered, deeply bonded shepherd. If you are the forever home Mako has been waiting for, please set aside your $325 adoption donation and fill out our online adoption application. We are so proud of this fabulous dog!     Isn't it bad enough that a 9 year old shepherd has to spend 10 minutes in the local kill shelter? Imagine a senior shepherd spending 10 long days sitting in a cold cement kennel, waiting for the owner that never comes. That's exactly what Sarge was forced to do. Stressful? So stressful that in those 10 days, magnificent Sarge lost 21 pounds! But did Sarge give up? No, he didn't. He was happy and excited to get out of his kennel and greeted the VSR volunteer like he had known her for years. Sarge is still a playful and silly dog who deserves a family that will cherish him and show him the love he deserves in his golden years. Filling ...     Meet 3 year old Gator. Gator was found wandering stray in Southern California with another shepherd. A Good Samaritan took both dogs in, got them up to date on shots, and had them fixed before they were transported to Las Vegas. So much of Gator's past is a mystery. What we do know is that she probably wasn't socialized very well back when she was younger, when it was so important that she experience new things. Gator is afraid of strangers and will bark and try to run or hide when new people approach her. She likes to meet people slowly and on her terms. Getting low and turning sideways while you ignore her is one way that you can ... (Read More)get her to approach you. Once she feels safe, she is a very affectionate and playful dog. Gator will benefit greatly from the free training classes that VSR offers all of our adopters. (Read More)the car keys, she jumps for joy and squeaks like she can't contain herself. She loves the car so much, she once insisted on spending the entire night in back seat. - Trips to the dog park. She loves to play with other big dogs. (She barks at dogs when she is on a leash, though.) - A big, soft dog bed. (Though she reserves the right to curl up in any number of locations in the house - especially ones where she can keep an eyeball on you.) Augie is very affectionate. Upon meeting you, she will immediately offer up her belly to rub. She will gently nudge you awake in the morning. Once you earn her trust, she might even venture up onto your bed to sleep with you. Augie is also quite goofy. She loves to sleep on her back with all fours in the air, or with her legs curled up against the wall. When she drinks water, she sticks her entire snout in the bowl. She is also the Mariah Carey of dogs - she has an incredible vocal range from the lowest baritone moans to the highest pitched soprano squeaks. Her former owner's children started calling her 'Squeaky' because of her enthusiastic response to the question, 'Do you want to go in the car?' She is endlessly entertaining to the humans around her. As you can see from her photos, she a very beautiful girl. She always gets compliments from passersby on her gorgeous coloring and striking eyes. Mere photos cannot do her justice. If you can offer Augie the loving home she wants and deserves, please fill out our online adoption application and set aside the $325 adoption donation. Because Augie has had her world changed enough already. She is ready for some stability and the love of her very own family. (Less)
